Welcome to the Sunderland Literature & Creative Writing Festival
Sunderland Literature & Creative Writing Festival is an annual celebration of the written word that has something for everyone. The diverse programme of over 140 events features many local artists and authors including Jayne Hughes, Fiona Veitch Smith, Amanda Revell Walton and Tony Wilson as well as a Comedy Writing Workshop, and Writing Crime Fiction with Ann Cleeves and David Mark.
The festival runs across October, in a variety of venues, with morning, afternoon, evening and weekend sessions. We want to make our events as accessible as possible for people with work, childcare, caring or other commitments. The festival has two strands – literature and creative writing! Everything related to Literature is in yellow and everything related to Creative Writing is in blue. The majority of the events are FREE.
The festival is delivered in partnership between Sunderland City Council, Sunderland MAC Trust and University of Sunderland.

Our aim is to focus on local talent and encourage everyone who lives, works or studies in Sunderland to take part. There are talks, opportunities to meet authors, poetry readings, exhibitions and activities with topics as diverse as Reading Philosophy to Lose Weight, the History of Whisky, What Became of Bunty? We hope that this selection of events will provide opportunities for people with an interest in creative writing, whether as beginners or early professionals, to gain insights, to develop their skills, and to build networks with other writers. We have also taken a broad approach to creative writing: we include events covering songwriting, writing for TV, audio drama and other forms of writing.
